Our facility is equipped with high-powered LED motion-sensitive lights that illuminate every corridor on the premises to ensure visibility at all times. To make sure these lights stay on even during an electrical blackout, we have an emergency electrical generator on standby 24/7.
If you can get to Abacus, you can get into your unit—the electricity, lights and heat will always be on. Indeed, the Abacus generator has kept both the electricity and heat on as necessary during several previous electrical power blackouts, during such occurrences in both winter and/or summer.
Further, secure gate access to the Abacus site is controlled by a customer-specified security code, which enables the gate system. All operating systems on the Abacus site (including fire alarm systems, sprinklers, after-hour intrusion/motion sensors, door alarms, etc.) are monitored for alarms 24/7 by an off-site service.
We also have an extensive fleet of indoor and outdoor cameras working in tandem with after-hours motion sensors to ensure we can keep track of everything that goes on at the facility at all times. Of course, our staff are trained to perform regular security checks throughout the day.
2. On-site help and expertise
Another element that we work hard at is to maintain and always deliver a high level of customer service, in all relationships and interactions with our customers. Our friendly team is a group of courteous self-storage experts.
We are always very pleased and happy to offer free advice to customers regarding various aspects of storage, from tips on packing and wrapping to guidance for choosing the right unit type and size.
In addition, we keep all kinds of helpful packing and moving supplies on hand at our facility, including boxes, tape dispensers, mattress covers, bubble wrap, packing paper, and locks. So, if you ever need such an item while you are on-site, you can get it immediately! We even have free wooden pallets for your use if you need them.
3. Environmental sustainability

For example, Abacus installed a large array of solar panels a few years ago, which enabled us to essentially exit the public electrical grid. In recognition, Tree Canada planted 112 trees in our honor for our environmental effort (Tree Canada is Canada’s largest tree-planting charity).
Further, our LED lights are installed with motion sensors to turn them off when not needed, thereby reducing power consumption. The indoor temperature in our building is maintained at a maximum of 10 degrees Celsius in the winter to keep our natural gas consumption to a minimum.
On all delivery doors, air blades have been installed to keep hot air out in summer and cold air out during winter (the air blades also keep out flying insects and birds). Likewise, a recent new steel roof installation gave us the chance to install extra insulation to retain heat and keep the building warmer in winter, repel heat, and keep the building cooler in summer. We will be taking similar action when another roof is replaced in the near future.
