Smart Storage Tips for Seasonal Items

Your home can only hold so much, and you don’t want it to be cluttered. If you have a lot of items to store away, like Christmas decorations, off season sports equipment like skis or golf clubs, or even summer patio furniture, why not rent a self-storage unit? It’s the perfect place to store all your seasonal items that take up too much space at home.

Abacus Self Storage was established in 1999 and is located in Richmond Hill. It’s easily accessible for anyone in the GTA from Toronto, Markham, Thornhill, Vaughan, Maple, Aurora and North York. Their storage facilities and rental storage units are very bright, clean, secure, and climate controlled, to ensure that all seasonal belongings can be safely stored until they are needed once more. We offer a variety of sizes of rental storage units to suit anyone’s particular storage needs. To learn more, contact Abacus Self Storage here.

However, and even if you have the space at home to store your seasonal items, here are some tips to help you save time and effort for storing your Christmas decorations and similar items, and to recycle some things in the process that you may not otherwise need. It will help you avoid the daunting task of sorting out that big box of tangled, broken, and unorganized decorations, and get on more easily and quickly with just enjoying the holiday season!

Egg cartons

Don’t throw out your cardboard egg cartons! They’re more useful than you think. You can use the egg cartons to store small round ornaments that are fragile and breakable. Because the cartons are easy to stack and safely tuck away, they are ideal for neat and easy storage. You can also use apple crates for larger round decorations.

Party cups

Besides putting your eggnog in them, party cups are also useful for storing round Christmas ornaments. Glue several cups to a piece of cardboard to keep them in order and you can even stack multiple layers on top of each other in a plastic bin. Each cup will safely protect individual ornaments and prevent them from being scratched or cracking, which is important, especially if they are expensive!

Water bottles

Recycle empty water bottles so you can store long strings of garland in them. There’s nothing more annoying than when a garland gets tangled around all of your other Christmas decorations and you have to untangle the mess. Water bottles are useful because you can see what’s inside and each one can hold up to two garlands!

Cardboard

Another usual tangle are several feet of holiday lights or streamers. Use rectangular pieces of cardboard to wrap the decorations around it to avoid a headache and frustration.

Plastic wrap

Use plastic wrap to keep your artificial tree clean and protected while storing it away for next season. When the time comes for you to bring it back out, just cut open the sides of the wrap with scissors and the branches will go back into shape. Old belts or bungee cords will also work to wrap the tree and condense its branches. (Sometimes, a house doesn’t have enough room to store a tree, so finding a storage unit might be ideal. Abacus Self Storage is the perfect place to store all your holiday decorations and all your other seasonal items.)

Coat hangers and coat racks

Wreaths can easily be damaged or crushed while in storage. You can avoid this by hanging them on a coat hanger and covering it with a plastic dry cleaning bag. A rolling coat rack is also useful if you have a lot of festive fineries. Use the rack to hang up a variety of holiday items and use plastic bags to protect them. This way, you can protect your decorations and store them all in one convenient spot. (Should you choose to do so, you’ll be able to transfer them into your storage unit in one go.)

Storage boxes

Use plastic storage boxes to store away large rolls of holiday gift wrap. There are boxes that can even fit under your bed to keep your home from being too cluttered. You can also use tall cardboard boxes or even a garbage can to stand up gift wrapping rolls together and place it in the corner of a room. There’s also the option of buying a hanging gift-wrap organizer that will fit in a closet to save space in your home and store your wrapping paper. The organizer also has pockets to hold scissors, tape, ribbon, gift bags, and other Christmas wrapping essentials all in one place.

Paper towel rolls

Use the cardboard tubes from paper towel rolls to prevent your wrapping paper from becoming unrolled. Simply cut the tube on one side and wrap it over the gift wrap roll! It’s as simple as that. This will save you from having to throw out wrinkled and damaged paper and save you money as well.

Label maker

With all the boxes and containers full of decorations, it can get hard to keep track of what box holds what. Use a label maker to label each box so you don’t have to open each container and rummage through it to figure out what’s in it. It’ll also save you time!
